Looked great!

I've always had a desire for purple hair, but never wanted to fully commit. So I tried this.
I loved that it didn't damage my hair and it didn't stink! I tried mixing it with conditioner after reading other reviews, but I didn't get a lilac color...I got grey. So apparently that trick doesn't work with ginger hair. But after redying it with just the dye I got a gorgeous color, no bleaching required! I had it in for two weeks with no fading, but I needed it out for I started actively trying and it faded away in a week!
Works as a filler and temporary toner.

During wedding season, feeling a bit drab, I decide to try a new look and get highlights. Big mistake. I ended up with bizarre level 7 or 8 half-tangerine half-blond hair. Not a good look. Not willing to let the stylist experiment further I went home and decided to play mad scientist.

First, I used a level 7 blond box dye to even out the color, but it was still too orange. I then ordered manic panic ultra violet to use a filler and toner. Being vegan direct deposit dye I felt it would be less damaging. It was.

I mixed it with conditioner [2 tbsp manic panic in 1 c. conditioner] and let the mix sit on my head, covered with a plastic bag, for 35 minutes. Then rinsed with lukewarm water. My hair was now much less orange. The next day I dyed over this with a different level 7 ash dye (Joico Vero K-Pak 7A). It was now a perfect light ash brown or very dark blond with just a hint of gold.

I have been using the same manic panic conditioner mix on my head once a week as a toner to keep the orange at bay. It hasn't damaged my fragile bleached hair.
It's alright. Stains pretty good.

This hair dye is pretty intense in that it will turn your shower bluish purple, along with any skin that's touched by it. Also, I don't think you don't need to keep it on for the full 30 minutes it says to. I pretty much put it on, and then rinsed it out when I was done applying (took me maybe 20-25, long hair). It's an interesting purple, but then again I did mix mine with a different color. My hair was a light bluish color underneath as well, which I'm sure affected it. I watched videos on this brand before I dyed it though, and most people were saying it came out much darker than thought. I think if I would have left it on for additional time, I would have also been disappointed in it being too dark.
Brunettes - Go for it!

I love the Manic Panic products; Vegan, no chemicals, not tested on animals and it does what it says.

I am a brunette (dark, dark brown!) and refuse to lighten/bleach my hair to achieve the purple. I know it's silly, but I refuse to put chemicals in it. So, for the Manic Panic, here's what I do:
1.) Pre-wash and dry hair (I use DevaCare No Poo shampoo & conditioner...you don't have to have curly hair to use Deva's line - there are no harsh chemicals which is why I use it, even though I do have curly hair, I recommend it anyway)
2.) Add color to hair. I separated my hair and did Manic Panic in Ultra-Violet, Midnight and Vampire Red. NOTE: Prior to adding color, you might want to slap some vaseline around hair line, ears, neck...or get a hair coloring stick called Remedy from Sallys...either way, protect the skin because it WILL stain.
3.) Slap on a shower cap...because you can never be too sexy!
4.) I bought a 'heat helmet"...it's like a heating pad for your hair :) I put it on for 30 minutes, off for 30. I did this for a total of 3 hours. NOTE: Because this is a conditioning color, it will NOT harm your hair no matter how long you keep it in! The longer the better because it is like a conditioning mask
5.) OK...the RINSE! :) Mix 50/50 of vinegar and cold water and spritz into hair and comb. I got impatient and just dumped the bottle on my hair (upside down over sink) and combed it. YES, it will stain, but COMET takes it right out of a porcelain or cast iron tubs/showers. I've had no problems.
6.) DO NOT wash with shampoo or conditioner...because you just conditioned it anyway.
7.) Style and go :)

To make the color last longer, don't wash so often. Mix some water and essential lavender oil together and spritz on scalp and rub with fingertips if you want a 'clean scalp' in between wash days. Plus, it's good for you to not wash your hair daily anyway! My color stays vibrant for about 3 weeks, but I wash my hair only 1-2 times/week. But, I've gotten a good 6 weeks of noticeable color.

Like I said, I had super-dark hair. However, in the sun light, flourescent lights, my flood lights outside...the red, blue and purple really add a gorgeous ting without being 'punk' (since I had a professional job, I have to be careful...however I'm a Zumba instructor too, so I gotta have fun!)

I have used the HOT PINK as well from Manic Panic and loved the results on that as well. I'm excited to try the turquoise and green to see what happens with that as well. My hairdresser was jealous of the color because she's been trying to achieve it on me anyway with Framesi color line, but without lightening it, we couldn't do it. Manic Panic actually gave me the color I wanted without hurting my hair :) Check out Manic Panic's website as well for more tips. I would've never tried it if it weren't for reading all their tips. For the price, it's worth trying out...even if you do have dark hair!

Have fun with it!

Update 5/21/15 - was asked for pics. Since that time, I ended up having my hair professionally lightened (which I regretted). I got tired of the $120+ upkeep and used Manic Panic for my touch-up. They're bleached about 4 inches from root and down (but not BLEACH blonde). Color held very well and looks great. I wish I had a pic of it on my actual natural dark hair, but I can tell you this, it shows up like it does in the "wet hair" pic.
Lasted about 3 weeks on untreated brown hair - looked very cute!

I let my 6 y/o dye her hair a few weeks before school - we did not strip out her hair beforehand, and it's a medium brown color. It gave her a nice purple color at the ends and we faded it up towards the scalp. It was definitely noticeable, and she loved it. It washed out in about 3 weeks, just in time for school! Lighter hair would probably take longer to wash out.

The process was pretty straightforward - because she couldn't wait to wash it out, we only put it on for about 30 minutes and wrapped her head in plastic to keep it from getting on everything. It's very conditioning and her hair was very shiny. We will definitely use again on her next school break!
I always keep a jar of this under my sink!

I've used this color for two different things: making a toner and actually dying my hair, it works perfectly for both! Over the winter, I decided it would be fun to do a purple streak. My mom, who is a hairdresser, recommended it and dyed it for me. She bleached a lock of my hair first then used this. I believe she left in in for 45 minutes and covered it with tinfoil before using the blow dryer over it for several minutes. It seriously lasted me two months before the color faded, I was amazed that it could possibly last that long!! I also used it when I bleached my hair blonde. Mix a small amount of this with your conditioner and you'll have beautiful platinum blonde hair.

One tip I have is if you use this make sure to stay out of the sun, just like any other dye it will fade faster.
I want to say that I LOVED the color of my hair right after dying it ...

First of all, I want to say that I LOVED the color of my hair right after dying it (over previously bleached hair). The purple came out bright and vibrant and EXACTLY what I was looking for. I also loved the way my hair felt right after rinsing it out. It was soft and conditioned feeling. Unfortunately, the color faded almost immediately. Even just wetting my hair made the color fade. By the time I washed it again, the color was fading to a lavender/gray. I would have to re-dye my hair weekly, or at least ever other week to keep up with the color. I have short hair, so it only took a small amount of dye. I could see it becoming costly if I had long hair which required more dye to upkeep. I just don't have the time on my hands to keep re-dying it over and over. A pro is (if you have that kind of time) you can re-dye with manic panic over and over without drying out your hair because it is so natural and actually GOOD for your hair. It was fun while it lasted!
Good For Toner, Not For Dye

This is probably the most vibrant dye I've ever used besides Special Effects, however the staying power could use a lot of work. I used this in hopes that the gorgeous, vibrant violet would stay for more than a week before turning white..Sadly it didn't. But it did fade into a really nice pale silver/white color, which I absolutely loved. That's when I decided to mix a few drops of this with conditioner and use it to keep my hair white, and it was perfect for that! I even did a lot of my friend's hair white with it. Would purchase again for toner!

My favorite manic panic color I've used with and without lightening my hair(I'm African American with medium brown hair) and it's worked great both times. It kind of comes off blue indoors but vibrant in the sun. I also have locs now and have used it on them and it works great just as nice as on loose hair

This is a great dye if you don't want to bother going to a salon and paying crazy amounts of money. I didn't even bleach my hair first (I'm a dark blond/light brown) and ended up with a nice, dark purple color that stayed bright for a week or two and then faded nicely into a light purple-gray that I really liked. It's easy to apply and relatively easy to clean off of hands and whatever else it might get splattered on, as long as you get it off quickly.
