I always thought that about a bottle and a half was the perfect amount for medium to long hair

Manic Panic is a brand I've respected for a long time. The fact that they've revolutionized hair dye (no more Kool-aid dying disasters), have been a punk rock presence for decades, AND use all-vegan ingredients holds them high in my book. If that was all I was judging the product on, they'd get five stars instead of four. However, there are a couple of things that I've consistently had "problems" with in regards to Manic Panic, that I haven't experienced with a couple other hair dye brands I use.

My first issue is the size of the bottle. Granted, the majority of people who are using these bold funky hair dyes tend to have short hair (thus needing less actual hair dye), that's not always the case. I've been using Manic Panic off and on for around fifteen years and have almost always had medium to long hair. Just to be on the safe side, I've had to pick up two bottles to be sure I wouldn't run out of dye with only half of my hair covered. I always thought that about a bottle and a half was the perfect amount for medium to long hair, so I've never understood why they don't offer multiple sizes of jars. Then again, I don't think any of the other major dye brands do this either, so I guess I can't really hold it against them.

Manic Panic also seems to "bleed" a lot more (and a lot more quickly) than some of the other vegan hair dyes I've used. The color comes out really quickly each time I wash my hair, which taught me to wash my hair less frequently. It also stains the tub and shower during the first few rinses, so I have to be careful if I'm using a friend's shower or a hotel shower. Do you know how weird it is to carry a bottle of bleach into a hotel room with you..? Yeah, kind of creepy. I also got into the habit of buying dark linens and bringing my own pillows when not at home. Why? Because when I'd sleep, the dye would rub off on the pillow and blankets, leaving embarrassing stains. This DOES happen with other dyes, but not as much as I've seen with M.P.

In spite of my saying that the dyes bleeding out and fading faster is a negative thing, it can also be fun. Every time I'd wash my hair, I'd end up with a new hair color. People were convinced I must dye my hair every few days. But really, I would only re-dye about every month or two when I'd have to re-bleach my roots.

If you're going to use Manic Panic's dyes, definitely bleach any part of your hair that you want to have colored. These dyes do NOT stick well to unbleached hair and will wash out very quickly.

Other than these small quips, I really like the variety of colors Manic Panic offers, and love their purple shades.
Awesome color - Understand HOW color works for maximum satisfaction

I LOVE Manic Panic brand! If you are new to dying your hair fun colors, you MUST know, that these are SEMI-permanent dyes, and they WILL WASH OUT with EVERY single hair wash! The depth of the color on your hair depends on your hair type (course, thin, thick, etc) and color (lighter hair will hold the initial color closer to what you see in the container as opposed to darker hair). The hair follicle will only absorb so much dye (the smaller pigment colors) and deposit the remaining on the outter "shell" of your hair. Each wash, the dye will gradually come out, so I recommend utilizing either with a pigment enriched shampoo, or DIY and add a small amount of the dye into your shampoo that you wash with. Also, wash your hair sparingly (2-3 times a week) and use dry shampoo in between. Tips aside, Manic Panic brand is fantastic, fun, easy to clean up, and safe on your hair while conditioning. I can leave this in my hair for hours (which I literally do) and it won't do damage because the color does not permeate the hair, only sits on it. The reviews saying this washes out fast - please see above. Proper care and understanding of how color works on the hair is imperative to satisfaction of this product.

Also, I often mix my colors, the color you see the dye is what it will look like on your hair (give or take a few shades based on the starting color of your hair).

I have used manic panic for years. I love manic panic. However, the 2 bottles I purchased here, something was wrong. It was watery, did nothing to my completely bleached hair, and even when I accidentally dropped a glop on my shoulder, it did nothing (usually stains until I use a dye remover cloth). So I experimented and rubbed a glob into my hands and let it sit. Rinsed right off with water. Thet were sealed, but worked nothing like when I purchase manic panic from my local store. Very odd. Ill just stick to Sallys down the street instead.
Terrible results

I don't know if the container I received was part of a bad batch or what but the color did NOT stay in. It took 3 hours and a total of 45 minutes within that 3 hours of applying heat for the color to even begin to stay in my hair. Even rinsing with minimum water pressure on the coldest possible setting for my shower nozzle the majority of the color came out within seconds. After 3 washes within a one week span my hair looked silvery blue and then turned a god awful green after 2 weeks of washing my hair in cold water and not applying more of this color. I ended up having all the color cut out of my hair it was so atrocious to look at, a total of 6 inches all over! I've used the rock n roll red color with perfect results and no issues so I really don't know what happened with this purple color. Save yourself a lot of time and frustration, don't get this color.

I had high hopes for this product. I bleached the lower half of my hair from a dark brunette to a lighter blonde and then colored it with Manic Panic Electric Amethyst. I didn't notice a lot of color washing out like other people have mentioned, but after rinsing and blow drying my hair...there was barely any color. :( The purple that showed up was really pretty, but my hair really just looks like it went back to being brunette with some purple streaks in it. I left it in for close to 45 minutes.
Dont waste your $ on the pink or the purple! They dont work, even with the bleach!

Bought rockabilly blue, this purple, a pink, & the 40 amp bleach for my daughters hair! The blue is great & we have used it many times. The pink & purple stayed in for maybe a whole day before it started to bleed together & look like cotton candy. Which my daughter actually liked! But by the end of the week, the purple & pink were completely gone. The blue is still holding strong & so did the bleach so now her hair is bleach with blue tips. I dyed my whole head purple in high school (20+ years ago) with this same dye & didn't bleach it first. My hair was purple for easily 3 months!! My conclusion is they must have changed the formula, so it just doesn't work now! If you want blue, go for it! But don't waste your $ on the purple of the pink. Super disappointed!!
The electric amethyst is not as good as the other colors

The electric amethyst is not as good as the other colors. I used 2 jars of this and 1 of shocking blue after I bleached my hair blonde. This was for my roots about 4 inches and the rest in the blue. I kept the color in for 4 hours and i didnt really show in most areas, it seems thin and not as strong as the first time i used this a few years ago. Sad... I like my hair color because its many different colors of blue, grey, purple etc but i wanted more purple and even with 2 it didnt do the job
I would recommend Manic Panic's Purple Haze

Did not do what it was supposed to :(. I would fight for a refund but it is my fault for lack of reading the reviews before purchasing :/. Do not buy this color unless you have another color to add to it. It is very thin and lacks substance when you are applying it which is a BIG SIGN IT DOESN'T WORK. I would recommend Manic Panic's Purple Haze. This color worked just fine for me and I have medium dark ethnic hair. And I didn't have to Bleach dye my hair for the color to show.
Strangely Weak Color for the Brand

2.0 out of 5.0 by Gloria P. on October 19, 2016
I've been using Manic Panic for over a decade now, usually with excellent results! However, this stuff fell short. I'm not sure if this is a bad batch, or a bad distributor diluting the dye with developer or something, but the dye itself wasn't as thick or vibrant as it normally is and the color I got was absolutely nothing like the color of the dye or the color swatches in the stores/online. Even after leaving it on for 5 hours on pre-lightened hair, it turned out more a light periwinkle, and is streaky in parts.

I have used many Manic Panic colors, it seems only the red and blue colors seem to stick. I had to do my daughters hair TWICE just to get something to show and it fell out in 1 wash. I even left on for over an hour and added heat for 30 mins. Same goes for the pinks, no show =/
